Rieda
Your AI route planner for road, gravel and MTB. Tell it where you’re starting and what you’re in the mood for. Rieda finds the way.
What it does
Rieda (rieda.app) is an AI powered conversational route planner built specifically for road cycling, gravel grinding, and cross country touring mountain biking. Created by solo indie developer Zigmas Vadapalas and powered by OpenStreetMap data, it replaces the tedious process of manually clicking and dragging waypoints on tools like Komoot, Strava, or RideWithGPS with simple natural language chat prompts.
Core Concept & How It Works Instead of painstakingly placing waypoints on a map, you simply type a conversational prompt such as: “50 miles from Boulder, fairly flat, quiet roads, stop by a coffee shop.”
Here’s what happens next: Routing graph & scoring: The engine generates and evaluates 20 possible loop variations against your constraints, scores them, and presents the top 3 options.
Conversational adjustments: Refine the route through chat follow ups (e.g., “make it 10 km shorter” or “less gravel”) or by manually nudging waypoints.
Data inspection: Inspect any point along the route for road surface (tarmac vs. gravel/unpaved), elevation profile, and way type.
Hardware exports: Finished loops export directly as .gpx or .fit files, compatible with Garmin, Wahoo, and Hammerhead Karoo computers.
Feature Breakdown Discipline profiles: Dedicated routing rules for Road (prioritizes verified tarmac and penalizes heavy traffic), Gravel (targets forest tracks, dirt roads, and paths), and Touring MTB (emphasizes climbs and flowy descents). Loop quality: Actively avoids repetitive out and back spurs, prioritizing genuine closed circuits with minimal duplicated segments.
Regional coverage: Primarily covers the United States plus 16 European countries (including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands).
Pricing model: Free tier: 10 route generations/adjustments per month with full GPX export. Pro tier: $5/month or $45/year for unlimited route planning and cross device library sync.
Rieda is ideal for cyclists who dislike fiddling with map editors and simply want quick, viable training loops from home or while traveling. For pure exploratory route generation, it outperforms traditional planners on speed and usability. That said, if you rely heavily on community segments, live navigation, or planning remote off grid expeditions, you’ll still want to keep tools like Strava or Komoot in your toolkit.
How it scores
Deterministically calculated from these five weighted sub-scores. See the rubric and weights.
The line call
- True loop generation: Excels at creating routes that start and finish at your doorstep with minimal repeated roads.
- Surface transparency: Clear breakdown of tarmac vs. unpaved percentages helps avoid unpleasant surprises on road bikes.
- Fair free tier: 10 loops per month is more than enough for most casual weekend riders
- Geographic limits: Not yet a global tool; planning outside Western Europe and North America is restricted.
- OpenStreetMap dependencies: Route quality depends on local OSM tagging; missing or incomplete tags can occasionally mislabel private driveways or rough singletrack.
- Single developer project: Lacks the extensive community heatmaps, segment databases, or live turn by turn companion apps found on Strava or Komoot.
