What it does
We’ve been testing the PredictWind DataHub Pro aboard our sailing boat for some time now, and we’ve been genuinely impressed by its capabilities.
Having previously used the original PredictWind DataHub during our Atlantic crossings, we had a solid benchmark for comparison. The DataHub Pro represents a significant upgrade, particularly in terms of speed, connectivity, NMEA data handling, remote access, and managing multiple internet connections onboard.
In this article, we share our real-world experience with the DataHub Pro—how we use it aboard Ambra, where we believe it makes the biggest difference for cruising and offshore sailing, and how it compares with the original DataHub we relied on during our Atlantic crossings.

What is the PredictWind DataHub Pro?
In simple terms, we think of the DataHub Pro as the connectivity and data hub of the boat.
It brings together your different onboard communication systems—including Starlink, LTE/mobile internet, and Wi-Fi—and integrates them with your boat’s NMEA network.
This allows the DataHub Pro to sit at the center of your onboard network, managing both your internet connectivity and the wealth of information generated by your navigation and onboard instruments.
Your NMEA network can provide a huge amount of useful data, including:
- GPS position and course
- Wind speed and direction
- Boat speed
- Depth
- Heading and autopilot information
- AIS data
- Other onboard instrument data
The DataHub Pro can then make this information available to compatible devices and PredictWind services, creating a more connected and integrated onboard system.
The DataHub Pro is designed to keep your boat connected whether you are coastal cruising or sailing offshore. Once installed and configured, it can quietly handle many jobs in the background, including:
GPS tracking NMEA data connectivity AIS data Remote NMEA access Anchor Alerts Data logging AI Polars Weather routing data Internet connection management Connection failover Remote access to boat data Some of these features require a PredictWind subscription, particularly the more advanced PredictWind services. For the full and current feature list, see the PredictWind DataHub Pro product page .
PredictWind's biggest strength is that it doesn't simply predict the weather it tries to answer what you should do with that weather.
And with AI Polars, it goes one step further: Weather data ,Boat performance, AI model ,Route optimization
That's what makes PredictWind particularly interesting as an AI tool. The AI isn't a chatbot bolted onto a weather app; it's embedded in the decision making engine.

The line call
- AI Polars learns your boat's actual performance from DataHub/NMEA data and continuously refines the performance model. It can incorporate wind, waves and even different day/night sailing behavior.
- Multiple forecast models gives sailors the ability to compare different models and identify forecast uncertainty rather than relying on a single prediction.
- Excellent offshore planning combines wind, waves, currents, tides and boat performance into a passage-planning workflow.
- Wave-motion analysis Professional users can evaluate roll, vertical acceleration and slamming incidence, which is particularly valuable for offshore passages.
- Strong DataHub ecosystem GPS tracking, NMEA data streaming, remote connectivity, AIS and AI Polars make it much more than a weather app.
- Good real world performance sailors report that its wind and wave forecasts can be highly useful for passage planning, although results vary by region and conditions.
- Forecasts are still forecasts. Even sophisticated routing cannot compensate for an incorrect weather prediction. PredictWind itself says the optimal route is a general guide rather than an exact road map and recommends updating routing as new forecasts arrive.
- AI Polars require hardware the personalized AI Polar system requires a DataHub, Professional Forecast subscription and appropriate NMEA/GPS data.
- Expensive at the high end getting the full offshore/AI/DataHub ecosystem can become a significant investment.
- Steep learning curve the sheer number of models, routing options, polars and weather layers can be intimidating for casual sailors.
- App/interface criticism some users praise the forecasting while criticizing the Offshore app's interface and usability.
- Limited forecast horizon wave forecasts currently extend only about 10 days, and forecast-model coverage decreases as you plan further into the future.
- Local conditions can still surprise it global/regional models can't perfectly capture every local effect, and users have specifically noted that routing should be treated as another decision making input rather than an unquestionable answer.
