Hugging Face and its robotics division Pollen Robotics have introduced Microduck, a small, waddling, duck shaped robot priced at $399. Announced this week, the device is being pitched as an approachable, playful entry point into physical AI, standing in contrast to a robotics industry often associated with imposing humanoids and quadruped "attack dogs."
What Microduck Actually Is
Microduck stands about 25 centimeters tall, weighs under 800 grams, and gets around on two legs. It packs 15 motors spread across its legs, neck, and head, along with an articulated beak that doubles as a gripper for picking up small objects. Onboard sensing includes a front facing camera, a compact lidar unit, two inertial measurement units, microphones, and a speaker, all run by a Rockchip processor with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Rather than speaking in words, Microduck communicates through sound. Each individual unit generates its own permanent "audio identity" the first time it powers on, giving every robot a slightly different voice. The company has said it wants people to relate to the device more like a pet than a typical assistant.
A removable 2,600 mAh battery provides roughly an hour of continuous use, and the robot ships with a bundled game controller so new owners can drive it around and try preset behaviors right away, including walking, sitting, crouching, kicking, roller skating, and recovering after a fall.
Built To Fail On Purpose
The defining idea behind Microduck is that its movements are not hand programmed animations but neural network policies trained through reinforcement learning inside a physics simulator, then transferred onto the physical hardware. Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue has described the philosophy as designing a robot that is made to move and ready to fall, arguing that showing people robots can stumble and recover is part of teaching realistic expectations for the technology.
That training pipeline, including the simulation environment, reward functions, and the full software stack, is open source and published on GitHub. Owners are meant to retrain, fine tune, and redeploy new behaviors themselves rather than treat the robot as a closed appliance.
Where It Fits Alongside Reachy Mini
Microduck is not Pollen Robotics' first product. The company, acquired by Hugging Face in 2025, previously launched Reachy Mini, a stationary desktop robot built around communication and expression that has reportedly sold more than 10,000 units. Where Reachy Mini stays in one place and focuses on interacting with people, Microduck is designed to leave the desk entirely and move through a room, making it a companion product built for action rather than conversation.
Price, Availability, and Audience
Pre orders opened this week at an introductory price of $399 before tax and shipping, with four color options: Cream, Graphite, Lavender, and Sky. First units are expected to reach customers in North America, Europe, and the UK before Christmas 2026. Add on accessories, including a charging pack and a developer kit with spare batteries, tools, and motors, are sold separately for people who want to modify the hardware itself.
While Microduck is small enough to be a fun desk companion or a STEM toy for kids, its primary audience appears to be developers and AI hobbyists who want an affordable, hackable platform for experimenting with reinforcement learning on real hardware rather than only in simulation.
The Bigger Picture
Microduck arrives as robotics continues to be framed as the next major frontier for AI companies looking to move beyond purely software based products. By keeping the price low, open sourcing the training stack, and leaning into a friendly, imperfect design, Hugging Face appears to be betting that approachability, not raw capability, is what will get physical AI into more people's homes.
